Fall 2024 Finds #2

A friend of mine out west somehow came across a Phenix Bottling Co. Duffy & Co. Phenix, RI crown top. This bottle has eluded me for over 10 years, so I was very happy that I was able to make a deal on it! Now for the blob top version!

I got an email from someone with a Geo. T. Dana & Co. Pawtucket, RI med. Sadly it appears that it was recently damaged, but this sunken front panel version was new and they were kind enough to mail it to me for free!

A friend came across a The F.L. Powell Pharmacy Thames & Pelham Sts. Newport, RI medicine at a flea market. I was amazed that after digging so much there last year we only found shards of a cobalt one. This will fill out my Powell family nicely!

He also picked up a W.A. Walling Charles St. Providence, RI at the same flea market. I have a rectangular one of these, but this one is a square!

A recent listing for a Shiloh Bottling Works Providence, RI seltzer caught my eye. Shiloh seltzers are scarce and typically sided green examples. This one was an older clear style with a highly detailed Indian head. I drove through a wicked storm to get it, but I have to say it was worth it!

Fall 2024 Finds #1

Normally estate sales are heavily advertised, but when someone posted one on Facebook and said it was appointment only I knew I had a better chance! There was a shed full of over 200 bottles and despite being picked over once, a few gems were missed! A Dr. Parkerson's Remedy was my biggest prize. This is an extremely rare Providence patent medicine. I believe I might have included it in one of my very old "New and not mine" posts.

Also in the mix was an Otis Clapp & Sons Millville variant. These were made by the Millville bottle works and I include them as a subvariant.

To my surprise, a Royal Carbonating Co. Providence, RI quart turned out to be a new variant. I've dug a lot of these and they have all been the same until now.

A Nectar Bottling Co. Providence, RI was also a new variant in a gray aqua color.

An American Bottling Co. Inc 1916 Providence, RI beer is a fairly common find, but this blob top version with no slugplate was a new one!

Summer 2024 Finds #12

This entry finally finishes the massive pharmacy bottle purchase!

An E.F. Mattison 277 Westminster St. turned out to be an unlisted address. (Far left)

A J. Metzger Pharmacist Providence, RI was a cool brand new variant from this pharmacist.

A John Metzger Allen Block Providence, RI was very similar to the listed example but there were a few discrepancies including the color.

I picked up an Eagle Bottling Co. Providence, RI blob from a friend. I was happy to see that it was an error bottle with a backwards 9 in the address!

A friend gifted me a Geo. A. Wood Chemist Newport, RI. It turned out to be a new 4-1/2" size of an unlisted variant I already had.

Summer 2024 Finds #11

Yup, even more additions from the pharmacy bottle purchase in this entry!

An A.W. Fenner Jr. Providence, RI has an amusing TS error instead of ST for street. This is the second error Fenner bottle I've seen and both are unlisted.

An A.O. Austin Pharmacist Providence, RI was ever so slightly different than the example I already had.

My second C.J. Luce & Co. Providence, RI also turned out to be a new variant!

A pair of Charles B. Burrington Providence, RI meds were also new variants. They measure 3-1/2" and 4".

An E.F. Mattison 291 Westminster St. turned out to be an unlisted size at 4".

Summer 2024 Finds #10

More additions from the pharmacy bottle purchase!

A James O'Hare Pharmacist Benefit St. Providence was an exciting addition. The newer style O'Hare bottles are common, but the older ones are rare!

Another James O'Hare Pharmacist Providence, RI was a new rectangular shape.

I dug a bunch of Horatio J. Watson Providence, RI meds a few years back, but this unlisted 6" size was not one of them!

Two more square E.W. Barrows Providence, RI were unlisted in shape and 2-1/2" and 3-1/2" sizes.

Leith & Danforth Providence meds are listed in a square shape, but not with sunken panels. These two are 3-1/2" and 4".

Summer 2024 Finds #9

This post continues with more additions from a huge pharmacy bottle purchase.

A Geo. T. Dana & Co. Pharmacists Pawtucket, RI was yet another new variant. This guy must have tried ordering every variation of a mortar and pestle bottle they had available!

An E.C. Danforth PhG Providence was an unlisted size at 4-1/2".

Two Wm. E. Clarke Pharmacist Providence, RI meds (3-1/2" and 4") were listed in aqua but not in clear. The color may be an online listing mistake.

I got a trio of E.W. Barrows Pharmacist High St. Prov. RI. One was a listed size but the 4-3/4" and 5" examples were not!

A cologne style C.E. Nichols & Co. Providence was also unlisted. This is the second cologne style from Nichols I am aware of.

Summer 2024 Finds #8

The massive Italian immigrant influx in Providence circa 1890 had such an impact that its effects are still evident in the Federal Hill neighborhood. The local pharmacies catered to the almost completely Italian neighborhood by having some of their bottles embossed in Italian! One of these was the Farmacia Del Popolo Atwells Ave. Providence, RI. An extremely rare bottle, I was even more surprised to see it was also a different variant!

An E.T. Luther Pharmacist Olneyville, RI would normally not be a terribly significant addition, but this example is a very early square. The overall crudeness and embossing style strongly point towards the early 1870s.

An E.A. Calder High St. Providence, RI is not typically a very exciting find. This one, however, was rectangular instead of the usual square!

A Wm. J. Burton & Co. Providence, RI turned out to be an unlisted size at 3-1/2".

A H.I. Hough Druggist Olneyville, RI was also a new variant. The only examples listed have a pictorial bird on them.

Summer 2024 Finds #7

My friend also had two Knowlton's Pharmacy Olneyville, RI medicines. One was a large size in aqua and the other similar in size to mine but with a much different embossing size.

A smaller size W.E. Cates Pharmacist Providence, RI also joined the family. This one has a different address than the listed examples.

I haven't found a W.A. Helmer Pharmacist Providence, RI in a while! This 4-1/4" size was unlisted.

One of the most unusual bottles he had was a Rustoff the Rustoff Co. Providence, RI. It was apparently advertised as a rust remover but must have been rather ineffective because I have only seen two of them!

A fancy John E. Potter Pharmacist Providence, RI was another favorite.

Summer 2024 Finds #6

A second George A. Peckham was noticeably older looking than your standard example, and joined the unlisted party as well.

The CT collection continued to give with an unlisted 5" E.T. Luther Olneyville, RI med.

Brimfield has provided few and far between finds the last couple of visits, but naturally I am still determined! My persistence paid off with the purchase of four Bare Rock Spring Soda Works Centerdale, RI deco sodas. I picked up a clear version last year and at long last one of the most elusive RI deco sodas finally surfaced!

A recent marsh dig turned up a rather sad looking shoulder embossed soda. Upon cleaning I found out it was a Royal Carbonating Co. Prov. RI variant.

A good friend of mine recently let me go through his collection of RI pharmacy bottles. It was an occasion I had waited years for, and the day had finally arrived! First up is an Emil S. Blumenkranz Newport, RI. Even after digging a few, this 6" size was a new one!

Summer 2024 Finds #5

A common Sherba Beverage Co. West Barrington, RI quart caught my attention because of the color, aqua! I dug it sadly broken in place.  I've seen at least two dozen in clear so hopefully I can upgrade this one I pieced back together.

A friend gave me a box of common sodas including a The Edw. Smith Co. Pawtucket, RI. While there are a bunch of variants, this particular one is unlisted in clear.

I went to see a collection in CT recently and was excited to discover that many of the bottles were from an old RI estate cleanout! The biggest standout was a D. Miller & Co. Square Deal Premium Wines & Liquor Prov. RI. A giant square quart is an unlisted shape and size!

The single RI blob turned out to be one I've been chasing for a while! A Caproni Bros. & Co. Prov. RI script slugplate blob. This is definitely one of the rarest of the Caproni bottles.

Another rare common bottle variant was a George A. Peckham Grocers Supplies Providence, RI with a disc neck.
